At First Baptist Church we believe in going beyond the border because it’s a way to love, it’s a way to reflect God, and its a way to reach out.

NEW LIFE DORMITORY Since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 the Dormitory has shut down and we no longer accept Dormitorians. The ministry we are focusing on now is threefold:

  1. SHOFAR INTERNATIONAL MINISTRY – focused on but NOT exclusive to foreigners who prefer Worship Services in English. This explains the “International” in the name. We have some expats who struggle with learning the local language so we decided to reach out to them in a Worship Service in English format.
  2. BIBLE TRAINING CENTER – We are in the process of transferring and continuing the Bible Training Center from Tuboy, Natonin to a forest land up in the mountains that we have acquired around 7 kilometers away from our place here in Bayombong. The main reason for the transfer is that Dominador, Dad’s brother who donated the lot where the Training Center was in Tuboy has gone back on his promise and has taken the land back for himself. Although having the training center in Bayombong makes it easier for us to manage. Please pray for partners in building a Multi-purpose Building that would serve as a Classroom and Dormitory.

Joanne Shetler

Wycliffe: Waxhaw NC

Joanne (Jo) is a home-grown girl who was called to missions right here at First Baptist Church. As a Bible Translator with Wycliffe, Jo was assigned to the Balangao people of northern Luzon where she, with Balangaos, translated the New Testament and started the Old Testament. Those Scriptures, new to these people, have now produced churches in every Balangao village with local Balangaos as pastors and leaders. In 1982 she was asked to lead the Anthropology Department for the Philippine Branch, helping others “find the doorway” for the Gospel in their places. Her widowed mother’s declining health brought her back to the states with co-worker Amy in 1995 where she currently resides near the JAARS facility in Waxhaw, NC.  She and Amy continue to travel the world conducting Culture meets Scripture workshops, equipping tribal believers as they struggle to align their cultures with the Word of God. The Lucasis came to Christ as a result of Jo’s ministry in the Philippines. Currently four other Balangaos have joined mission organizations, “once a mission field now a mission force.” Her story has been told in the book, And The Word Came with Power.
